Beauty comes from within. And your hair is no exception. Here are some foods and supplements that nourish your hair.
Gelatin
Hands down my favorite “hair food.” Gelatin comes from animal (mostly cows and pigs) bones, skin, and tissues. The animal parts are boiled to extract collagen. This protein-rich collagen is gelatin. I take about 4 tablespoons a day. When I started, within the first couple weeks I noticed my nails were stronger, my eyelashes were longer, and my hair was growing at a phenomenal rate. I sprinkle it in my coffee, add it to smoothies, and my morning detox drink. The green container of gelatin does not gel, so you can add it to anything (soup, cereal, anything). You can also add gelatin to your no poo product or hair mask for added protein (warning: do not do this often or your hair will overdose on protein causing breakage). Read more about gelatin here.
Hair Supplement
There are a ton of hair supplements on the market. But if you are going to make the effort to use a natural, no poo method to wash your hair, make sure you take a natural, whole food supplement. I like this one. It has biotin, folic acid, calcium, magnesium, zinc, aloe, MSM, ad lots more goodies. Plus it is pretty delicious.
Omega 3
Omega 3 fatty acids are great for your hair. They moisturize from within and give your hair added shine. Foods high in omega 3 include pasture raised meats, salmon, walnuts, beans, eggs, Brussels sprouts and spinach. My favorite sources of omega 3 are fermented cod liver oil (read about it here) and flaxseed (add ground flax seed to smoothies, add a handful to your baked goods, or sprinkle on toast, yogurt, & cereal).
Water
When you are dehydrated, so is your hair. Stay hydrated, my friends.
Whole Foods
Eating a whole food diet is important for many reasons, hair is the least of them. But hair is what we are talking about here. Here are some of the foods that your hair loves:
- Green vegetables like kale, spinach, Swiss chard
- Salmon
- Walnuts and almonds
- Sweet potatoes
- Blueberries
- Eggs
- Citrus fruit
- Carrots
- Bell peppers
- Oysters
- Lentils
