Andrea and I have been in a couple of the same blogging communities over the last couple years. Her hair care routine has been completely chemical free since 2010! I’ve learned some good tips from her and excited to share her routine with you! You can find out more about Andrea on her blog at It Takes Time.
Tell us about yourself
I am a former journalist and mother of nine on a quest to live more naturally. My journey started when our family’s health declined following a toxic mold exposure. After vacating our home we embraced a radical lifestyle change leaving any and all chemicals behind. You can find me on my blog at It Takes Time.
What made you decide to go “no poo?”
Having already committed myself to using personal care products safe enough to eat I knew I wanted to find a system that was completely natural. For hair, I started with rhassoul clay.
What is your haircare routine?
I stopped coloring my hair at the age of 51. I was quite gray under all of that color. Slowly my hair became darker (although still gray in the front.) The back of my head went from lots of gray to dark. I have used henna successfully over the years but for the most part I leave the color alone. I now wash my hair every 7-10 days with herbal formulas from Morocco Method. I alternate with rhassoul clay still as I do love the depth of cleaning offered by the clay. I no longer use a hair brush – instead I use a sheep horn comb. I don’t style my hair but keep it shoulder length and simply comb it, allowing it to air dry. I have found I love simple!

Final words of advice?
Be patient with the process. Your hair can feel worse before it feels better. I had beauticians try to convince me to return to chemicals as the texture was not what they are used to. I have stayed strong and the reward has been great. I used to have thin, oily hair and now have thick hair that doesn’t ever feel oily!
Before and After
This is a before (on the left) and after (on the right) shot of Andrea. I can definitely tell a difference in the texture. These photos are 6 years apart.
